To Live Like Shakespeare – Marilyn Rea Beyer

I want to live like Shakespeare.

I could move to Stratford-Upon-Avon

And live down the block from Anne Hathaway.

But I’m not into the tourist trade.

Still, I’d love to live in one of those houses

With a pointed roof, wattle and daub with criss-crosses,

And a rounded door.

Oh sure. I know that inside there’d be

Modern plumbing, central heat

And thermal-pane glass in the windows.

But sometimes

When I’d be going down the back stairs

To do the wash,

I could imagine myself as Ophelia

Going down to the water

To throw herself in.
